To Be, or Not to Be

As I sat her at my computer this morning, I started thinking about what it means to be free. I mean to truly be free.

To be free to think as I want to think. To be free to read what I want to read. To be free to say what I want to say. To be free to go where I want to go. To be free to do as I want to do. To be free to live as I want to live.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized how quickly we are losing all of our freedoms and how willing we seem to be to give them up.

Just think of the freedoms we have given up in the past twenty months under the guise of “protecting ourselves from Covid-19”. The number of infringements on our Constitutional rights and freedoms that have been imposed on us in the name of Covid-19 are almost beyond comprehension.

And yet we continue down the same path, never veering from our course. It’s like we are sailing on the Titanic and Covid-19 is the iceberg directly in front of us. And once we hit the iceberg, we are doomed to sink.

But Covid-19 is only a symptom of a much bigger problem. It’s almost like a test is being conducted to see just how willing we are to give up our rights and freedoms, seemingly without question.

And we have failed this test miserably.

Now we are facing ever more and greater threats, threats that are coming straight from a government that is supposed to be a servant of the people.

It began with the passage last week of House Resolution 3684 (HR3684) - the $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which is about as gross a misnomer as you can possibly have since only about 10% of the total bill was for actual infrastructure.

But an even bigger threat looms on the horizon. Congress intends to pass House Resolution 5376 (HR5376) – the inappropriately named “Build Back Better Act” before Thanksgiving through a process called Reconciliation. This nearly $2 Trillion (originally $3.5 Trillion) bill is chock full government waste and "social spending" designed to take away more of our freedoms than any other bill in the history of the United States.

And that doesn't even consider the $3 Trillion in additional debt our children and grandchildren will have to repay if both of these bills pass. Maybe that is why the government isn't worried about inflation (or maybe I should say they welcome inflation) as they intend to let the debt just "inflate" away - but that is a topic for another blog.

Sadly, this threat comes not from a foreign government, but from our own government. If this bill passes, it will be our fault, we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

In the opening line of Act 3, Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”, Prince Hamlet says “To be, or not to be; that is the question.”

If I may be so bold as to paraphrase the great bard, I would add a single word to this line as follows:

“To be, or not to be, free; THAT is the question.”

If you truly want to be free, if you value your rights and freedoms, then I urge you to contact your Congressman/woman and Senator and implore them to vote against HR5376.

To be, or not to be, free is the only question that matters.
