Today is Friday the 13th. For most of us, it is an event that happens once or twice a year and is heralded as a harbinger of bad luck, much the same as a black cat crossing your path, walking under a ladder, or breaking a mirror is supposed to bring bad luck.
Whatever your beliefs, Friday the 13th stands out as being different from other days and is generally given the benefit of the doubt by most people – just to be on the safe side.
In my 70-plus years on this Earth I have experienced many Friday the 13th’s, but I can’t recall anything really bad ever happening to me on any of those days. However, I still find myself being a little more cautious on Friday the 13th – just in case.
But I can remember many bad things happening to me and many others on days other than Friday the 13th. However, these bad things that happened weren’t the result of bad luck, per se – they were the result of Congress being in session.
Just like Friday the 13th, Congress is a harbinger of bad things happening. But these bad things don’t happen as a result of bad luck – they happen as a result of bad legislation.
Unlike Friday the 13th, these bad things don’t just happen on one or two days a year – these bad things happen every day that Congress is in session, and Congress is in session over 200 days every year.
Every day that Congress passes another piece of bad legislation is another day of bad luck for We the People. Unfortunately, the bad luck that Congress brings down upon us doesn’t stop when the day is over – it goes on and on and on.
The only thing that could make things worse would be for Congress to be in session every day of the year, which of course we know will never happen, as Congress (fortunately) loves to take extended vacations and recesses.
Maybe we could limit Congress to only meeting on Friday the 13th. Then the ONLY days we would have to worry about bad luck would be Friday the 13th, and that would be a good thing!
But we all know that will never happen, and I fear that we are not only condemned to suffer from bad legislation for many years to come, but that it is going to get much worse before it gets better.
