In January 1776, Thomas Paine published a pamphlet entitled Common Sense in which he demanded freedom from Britain. His writings electrified the American colonies and prodded other colonists to support Americas fight for freedom, and ultimately spurred passage of the Declaration of Independence.
Later that same year, on December 23rd, while serving as a soldier in the Continental Army, he wrote a series of essays entitled “The American Crisis” calling for “perseverance and fortitude” during the Army’s bleakest days, preventing Washington’s Army form falling apart during a harsh winter.
He began his first essay with the now world-famous line “These are the times that try men’s souls.” But I personally believe it is one of the last lines of his first essay that truly sums up his message to the people of the United States.
“By perseverance and fortitude we have the prospect of a glorious issue; by cowardice and submission, the sad choice of a variety of evils . . .”
Never were his words more applicable than they are today. Never was a message to the people of this country so important as it is now. Never was the future so bleak as the future we face if the Left prevails in its quest to turn the United States of America into a Socialist Utopia.
As we get ready for the 2022 election cycle let us remember the words so eloquently extolled by Paine.
Now is not the time for cowardice and submission. Now is not the time to falter in our efforts to restore conservative values back to We the People. Now is not the time to give up and go home. Now is not the time to submit to the variety of evils that the Left hopes to impose upon us.
Instead, now is the time we must show resolve. Now is the time we must double and redouble our efforts. Now is the time for We the People to have the perseverance and fortitude to see our mission through to its glorious conclusion.
These are indeed the times that try men’s souls. Let us heed the words of Thomas Paine and let that be the source of our resolve.
