George Orwell Was Right

I don’t know how many of you have ever read George Orwell’s masterpiece “1984”, but it if you haven’t, it is well worth the time and effort, and will open your eyes to what is going on in America today.

Orwell selected the year “1984” by reversing the last two numbers of the year in which he wrote the book - “1948” - a look into the future of only 36 years. And while he might have been somewhat optimistic (or pessimistic) about when his vision of our future world would occur, he was correct in that it would occur.

In Orwell’s “1984”, OCEANIA was ruled by an all-powerful government that controlled every aspect of a person’s life. There was only one political party – The Party – and everyone was a member – a comrade – or else. The leader of the party was Big Brother, although no one knew who Big Brother was, or if he actually existed.

The three slogans of The Party were:

  • War is Peace.

  • Freedom is Slavery.

  • Ignorance is Strength.

The government was divided into four Ministries –

  • the Ministry of Truth (“Minitrue” in Newspeak), which was responsible for news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts;

  • the Ministry of Peace (“Minipax”), which was concerned itself with war;

  • the Ministry of Love (“Miniluv”), which maintained law and order; and

  • the Ministry of Plenty (“Miniplenty”), which was responsible for economic affairs.

In Orwell’s world, nothing was illegal because there were no longer any laws, but if a citizen did something that the government didn’t like, it was reasonably certain it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty-five years in prison. Citizens were under constant surveillance 24/7 (Big Brother is Watching You).

The worst crime a citizen could commit was “Thought Crime” against the government, and a day never went by that a spy or saboteur was not unmasked by the Thought Police and arrested.

Every day, a program called “the Two Minute Hate” was broadcast that required mandatory viewing and participation by all citizens. It consisted of showing the face of Emanual Goldstein, the Enemy of the State, a renegade who had once been one of the leading figures of The Party, almost on a level with Big Brother himself, and then had engaged in counter-revolutionary activities, had been condemned to death, and had mysteriously escaped and disappeared.

Goldstein was a traitor and all subsequent crimes against The Party, all treacheries, acts of sabotage, heresies, and deviations sprang directly out of his teachings. He was an object of hatred more constant than war with one of Oceania’s two rival powers Eurasia and Eastasia, since Oceania was always at war with one of these powers while at peace with the other, or so the people were told.

If The Party said that it had never been at war with Eurasia, or Eastasia, then that must be the truth. If the citizens of Oceania accepted the lie which The Party imposed – if all records told the same tale – then the lie passed into history and became the truth. “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past” ran The Party slogan.

“Reality control”, they called it, or “doublethink” in Newspeak.

Does any of this sound the least bit familiar to you?

Does Big Brother exist in our world in 2021? Perhaps, but under a different name (or names) – the Deep State, Global Elitists, Special Interest Groups, etc.

Is America ALWAYS at war with one of its rivals? Hmm, it sure seems that way. The military-industrial complex does everything it can to make certain that their existence is justified.

Does the government try to control every aspect of your life? Well, yeah - Duh!

Do we have a Ministry of Truth that controls the news, entertainment, education and the fine arts? Only if CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Facebook, Twitter, Hollywood liberals, progressive school boards, teachers and professors, and most artists, be they musicians, poets, visual artists, or clowns count as a collective ministry. I’m going to vote yes on this one.

Do we have a Ministry of Peace? Yep, I think the US military probably qualifies as that.

Do we have a Ministry of Love? Yep, it’s called Antifa, BLM and the Defund the Police movement.

Do we have a Ministry of Plenty? Yep again, it’s the Federal Reserve System.

Are we under constant surveillance? Ask Edward Snowden for the answer to that one.

Are we guilty of Thought Crime? Only if we are NOT Democrats (Comrades).

Do we have an Enemy of the State? Yep, his name is Donald Trump.

Do we have a Two Minute Hate every day? Nope, we have a 24 Hour Hate every day.

Do we have Reality Control, aka Doublethink? Yep again, it's called media censorship.

If George Orwell were alive today, I’m pretty sure that he would look around him and realize that 2021 is even worse than the future he envisioned in 1948 when he wrote 1984. And he would say it is worse because, like sheep being led to slaughter, the people have let it happen and are doing nothing to stop it.

In fact, many of them or openly encouraging it.

George Orwell’s future is upon us.

We have seen the enemy, and it is us.

I'll need to put 1984 on my list to read. I haven't read it since high school!
